The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA) recently announced the publication of a new technology brief. This brief is focused on a new corrosion risk assessment tool, which can help combat the high costs of corrosion.
Corrosion is an insidious problem around the globe, NCMS explains, costing industries and governments billions of dollars each year in prevention and remediation. Simultaneously, it can take critical equipment and infrastructure out of service.
According to a study commissioned by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, the direct effects of corrosion cost domestic industry and government groups about $276 billion each year.
To address this, a recent NCMS initiative has created a corrosion risk-based assessment, which features a dynamic survey designed to quantify the corrosion susceptibility and consequence of equipment and infrastructure.
The results can allow users to identify vulnerabilities early in the design process when corrosion mitigation steps can have greater impact. While the tool was developed for U.S. Army assets, it is widely applicable to a broad range of high-value assets including bridges, buildings, industrial equipment, utility systems, and more.
