High-performance coatings, linings, and fireproofing products manufacturer Carboline (St. Louis, Missouri, USA) recently announced the launch of Carbothane DTM Mastic, which it describes as a game-changing, one-coat solution for emergency maintenance or quick-turn coating projects.
Carbothane DTM Mastic is a urethane-based hybrid that exhibits strong performance over minimally prepared steel surfaces, according to Carboline. Its mastic properties offer excellent corrosion protection—and, as a urethane, it retains its color and gloss longer and weathers far better than epoxy mastic maintenance coatings.
"The value of Carbothane DTM Mastic in the market is clear: Better corrosion protection and great visual appeal in a single coat,” says Jeff Anderson, executive vice president of quality, research and development, and commercial resources. “It performs exceptionally even over marginal surfaces, so it's ideal for unplanned spot maintenance or emergencies.”
In July 2023, Carbothane DTM Mastic was trialed on an emergency pipeline coating project at a liquid terminal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, after corrosion and discoloration were found. The terminal owner needed the piping repainted quickly to remain in compliance with regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The product was hand applied in tough conditions, including a minimally prepared surface, the presence of moisture, and very hot summer temperatures, according to Carboline. The application was smooth, and the coating performed as intended. This brought the piping back into EPA compliance with no fines.
"This field trial, and other recent success stories like it, demonstrate the immediate impact Carbothane DTM Mastic has had on unplanned or emergency coating project outcomes,” says Justin Manuel, director of the global product line. “Every product we develop is intended to solve specific problems, so the market's response to Carbothane DTM Mastic so far is a great sign.”
Carbothane DTM Mastic is available throughout North America.
