The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), a global nonprofit representing more than 33,500 members in the materials, corrosion, and coatings industries, recently announced its 2024 Dr. A. John Sedriks Seed Grant.
This grant, valued at $35,000, aims to support the development of innovative research programs in materials protection and performance. This encompasses corrosion, coatings, degradation, and related areas.
The grant period will span from January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2024, with the potential for a one-year extension.
Eligible applicants are those new to academia (within five years) or the materials protection and performance sector. New research areas and significant expansion of existing research within the fields are also encouraged. Previous recipients of legacy NACE Research Seed Grants are not eligible for consideration.
To apply, interested researchers must submit a comprehensive proposal, including the following elements:
- A cover sheet with a title, PI contact information, and abstract (one page)
- The proposal description should provide a clear statement of the work, outlining the objectives, expected significance, and timeline of the proposed work. The proposal should also emphasize the relationship of the work to the current state of knowledge in the field. (10 pages maximum)
- References cited and appendix (no page limit, but brevity is encouraged)
- Proposed budget sheet for $35,000 and budget justification for the first year (one page). Funds may not support university indirect costs or overhead.
- Current and pending support (one page)
- Current facilities (one page)
- PI’s biography sketch (two pages maximum)
This is a single PI solicitation, and proposals with more than one PI will not be considered.
The esteemed Legacy NACE Seed Grant has a rich legacy, with the inaugural recipient being honored in 1967-1969. Since being named in honor of the late Dr. A. John Sedriks, a distinguished corrosion researcher and pioneer in corrosion control by metallurgical modifications, this grant pays tribute to his significant contributions to the field.
Dr. Sedriks’ influential work at LaQue Corrosion Technologies and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) left an enduring mark on corrosion research. He was crucial in starting the NACE Seed Grant Program and funding the grant through ONR.
The application deadline is November 30, 2023. Email questions and completed proposals to the AMPP Research Program Committee (RPC) at ResearchProgram@ampp.org.
