MineralTech Gulf Coats Abrasives, LLC (Crosby, Texas, USA), a manufacturer and supplier of abrasive blast media, announced that it had recently acquired Specialty Sand Company (Houston, Texas, USA) and American Industrial Minerals (AIM) (Deweyville, Texas, USA). The transaction was executed by MineralTech co-owners Glenn McClain and Shawn Barnes.
MineralTech will operate Specialty Sand Company’s processing plants and maintain its brand. This acquisition will enable all companies to expand their products and service base throughout the Gulf Coast while increasing future growth and development opportunities for new abrasive products from both of the acquired companies.
“There will be some consolidation of manufacturing and services, but we intend to offer the same quality and service that both MineralTech, Specialty Sand Company, and AIM were built on,” says McClain.
The acquisition of Specialty Sand Company was a natural fit for MineralTech due to a shared history between the two companies. Founded in 1949 by William A. Keckley, Specialty Sand was in business for 73 years until the Keckley family decided to retire. The two MineralTech co-founders started their careers in the abrasive industry at Specialty Sand, working alongside Robert “Bob” McClain, father to Glenn McClain and father-in-law to Shawn Barnes. With more than 40 years of abrasive manufacturing and marketing experience, McClain and Barnes founded their company in 2011 in order to better serve customers in the industrial painting industry.
