Dynamic AC and DC stray currents are a growing concern for pipeline asset operators. Short in duration and hard to detect, these events can create serious conditions that can lead to accelerated corrosion and material loss.
With electric grid and electric transportation infrastructure forecast to greatly expand over the next decade, the time is now for operators to develop proactive strategies to address dynamic currents.
Technology is also converging toward a future where pipeline operators have more visibility into dynamic events. Remote monitoring units, traditionally reading on a frequency of hourly or daily, have provided limited benefit for detecting and monitoring dynamic events. In contrast, dataloggers capable of fast sampling do not enable real-time visibility.
In 2022, however, new technologies and products can form the basis of proactive monitoring strategies.
Held on Thursday, Oct. 27 and viewable on-demand after that, a new webcast from MOBILTEX (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) will explore strategies and technologies for understanding transient AC and DC events.
