Pilot Projects Begin for Ultrasonic Wall Thickness Inspections via Drones

Software company Apellix (Jacksonville, Florida, USA) announced that it is now identifying pilot projects for ultrasonic wall thickness (UT) inspections of aboveground storage and terminal tanks.

Apellix uses its aerial robotic platform with patented software and sensor arrays control to complete tasks that can be too expensive or dangerous to otherwise perform.

Using semi-autonomous drones, Apellix can perform UT wall thickness measurements on tanks as high as 60 meters. The system can measure up to 100 locations per hour, reporting real-time results to the engineer on the ground.

All test data, as well as test location, environmental data, and video confirmation, is timestamped and stored on the onboard computer. From there, it can be downloaded to Excel or the customer’s reporting software.

The Apellix systems use the DeFelsko PosiTector UTG M gauge with a single element 5 MHz contact transducer. If you are interested in evaluating the system, information is available by emailing info@appelix.com, calling (904) 647-4511, or visiting the company’s website.
