Building Enclosures Association Releases New Industry Standards Manual

The International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) (Raleigh, North Carolina, USA) recently announced the release of its 2020 IIBEC Manual of Practice: Roofing, Waterproofing, and Exterior Wall Consulting and Quality Observation. Now in its third edition, the Manual offers more than 300 pages of information, photos, graphics, and fillable forms related to recommended best practices in all areas of building enclosure consulting.

Focusing on specialized areas such as commissioning, testing, and expert witness service, the 2020 Manual of Practice explores pertinent topics such as drone use for roof and façade examinations, electronic leak detection for locating breaches in membranes, and whole-building air leakage testing for determining the airtightness of enclosures. In addition, the Manual provides procedures for construction contract administration, contract administration forms, a complete glossary of industry terms, and building enclosure consulting standards.

According to Rick Craig, a co-leader of the IIBEC task force, the continually expanding activities of the association, along with technological advances in the field, necessitated the revision of the Manual. Craig also claims that the updated IIBEC Manual includes consulting and observation credentials that didn’t exist during the last edition of the Manual developed a decade ago.

“The previous version of the Manual focused primarily on best practices for roof consultants and observers,” he says. “The revised edition addresses best practices for all aspects of building enclosure consulting and observation.”
