Chemetall (Frankfurt am Main, Germany), the surface treatment technologies unit in BASF’s coatings division, began construction of its surface treatment site in the Dushan Port Economic Development Zone of Pinghu, Zhejiang province, China. The site is scheduled to commence operation in the first quarter of 2021.

The surface treatment facility in Pinghu, China is the largest investment in Chemetall’s history, according to Christophe Cazabeau, senior vice president in the surface treatment division of BASF. The new site will “meet the growing needs of our customers in China for reliable, high-quality and sustainable surface treatment products and system solutions,” says Cazabeau.

Currently, the new site is expected to house production, administrative offices, a laboratory and a warehouse. Chemetall officials believe the energy efficient and sustainable site will have the capacity to expand in coming years, with the ability adapt to new production requirements and manufacture a comprehensive surface treatment portfolio.

As Hui Jin, managing director for Shanghai Chemetall Chemicals Co., Ltd., points out, Chemetall has had a presence in China since 1995. Since that time, the company has served various segments such as automotive OEM and components, aerospace, and aluminum finishing and glass. With the new surface treatment site in Pinghu, Chemetall will be positioned to “provide a strong manufacturing base for our business to further strengthen our supply position in China,” says Jin.
