Crevice Module Added to Corrosion Software Platform

The CorrosionMaster software platform from Elsyca, Inc. (Atlanta, Georgia, USA), designed to simulate the inherent galvanic and uniform corrosion susceptibility of assemblies of various substrates, was recently extended with a brand-new crevice corrosion module.

“When it comes to crevice corrosion, local geometrical effects start playing a role,” the company explains. “Access to oxygen is limited within the crevice, and concentration changes cannot be neglected anymore. Hence, the macroscale simulation approach was extended to the level of the microscale.”

As such, the crevice corrosion module allows users to model the local characteristics within the crevice. The platform’s goal is to identify corrosion hot spots and predict corrosion rates, allowing engineers to quickly evaluate design alternatives to improve the functional life and judge the difference in corrosion depending on the environment in which a product is operated.

The technology is based on finite element analysis techniques for solving the potential distribution in a thin film over surfaces as a function of polarization characteristics.
