NACE International announced May 23-24, 2018, as the dates of its annual legislative day, aimed at informing representatives in the U.S. Congress (Washington, DC, USA) of the group’s mission to protect people, assets, and the environment from the adverse effects of corrosion.

Registration for the event is free, and all NACE International members are invited and encouraged to attend, according to event organizers. The registration deadline is May 10, 2018. “Now more than ever before, every member of Congress needs to understand how important corrosion control is to public safety and to the U.S. economy,” the group says in a statement.

Events include an annual reception with the U.S. Corrosion Prevention Caucus, with both policymakers and regulators present. Attendees will hear an update on the status of policies and legislation affecting businesses and professionals in the corrosion industry.

“Associations like NACE play a vital role in educating both Members of Congress and the public on important issues and their impact on public policy,” says U.S. House Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas), who represents the 22nd district of Texas and is co-chair of the Corrosion Prevention Caucus along with Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-Connecticut).

Olson adds that his experiences with constituents often have a direct correlation with his views and potential votes on policy. “My constituents are my bosses; their input absolutely affects my view on issues and impacts my votes,” Olson says. “How an issue will impact my state, region, and in particular my district will absolutely impact how I vote.”

In particular, Olson says traveling to meet with policymakers at their place of work can be important because it allows attendees a glimpse into how issues are debated and decided in Washington.

“While I strive to meet with constituents in the 22nd District of Texas, it is always beneficial for them to also see firsthand how the work we do happens in Washington,” he says. “Meeting with them in the district allows us to be informed on what issues are important to them. The U.S. Capitol is their Capitol. They should see and experience the inner workings of their government in action.”

Those in attendance for the legislative day will also be able to meet with appropriate U.S. regulators and can take advantage of the opportunity to network with other NACE members.

Prospective attendees can register on NACE’s official web page for the event. Hotel recommendations and a complete agenda will be posted soon on that page, according to event organizers.
